Thank you for visiting this page which explains a bit more about how you can join us.
What qualifications do I need?
You need have no formal qualifications. You do need to be able to solve problems and have the ability to turn your ideas into good quality and reliable finished products with the aid of other panel members. You also need to have some workshop facilities of your own in which to make things. Craftsmen, model engineers, programmers, electronic engineers, mechanics, skilled hobbyists - all are all welcome.
How much time will it take?
As much as you wish to give, each project is put to panel members for them to volunteer to take it on. If you feel you have particularly specialised skills and not much time don’t worry - we would still like to hear from you and have you join us even if its only for other panel members to be able to call upon your advice when needed. The commitment is very flexible.
How is it all run?
The panel meets for about 2 hours a month at the RAOB Hall at St Albans on the third Thursday of the month at 13:30. More details can be found here. We discuss both projects in hand and new tasks. Additionally the secretary will contact members in between times if new tasks come in. We also have a mailing list to distribute project information.
Do I need to be able to qualify for free bus pass before I can join?
Most certainly not. REMAP has traditionally had a core membership of retired professional engineers who bring unrivalled knowledge and experience to the organisation. However we also have on the South Herts panel systems engineers, mechanics, and a telecommunications manager who are still a long way from retiring. As long as you have the skill to help produce some of the wide variety of aids we make we want you. Please look over the past projects to see the sort of jobs we do. Could you have done better? If so - we want you. If you can’t see anything that you could have made then we probably need you all the more - we can only work within the skills of our panel members. We would particularly welcome anyone with PIC, programming, control, software and electronics expertise. No one is too young or too old to help.
Oh, and if you think our more senior members are likely to be rather staid - just put them near a skip full of useful scrap and watch what happens next.
You have talked me into it - what do I do next?
If you are interested in joining us you can send us an e-mail or write to or phone the secretary or chairman whose contact details can be found on our contact page here. If you want more information or simply want to talk it through any of our members will be willing to talk to you at any time. is our e-mail address for membership enquiries.
